'Mariesii' is a broad shrub with a flattened growth habit, growing about 1.5 m high and twice as wide. Very old specimens can grow more than 2 m tall. The stem branches are strikingly horizontal, so the shrub typically grows in tiers. The leaves are ovate to oval and 3-8 cm long. They are light green in summer and turn red in autumn. In May, the flat umbels open, measuring up to 10 cm in diameter. They consist of 6-8 sterile marginal flowers and numerous fertile flowers in the centre of the inflorescence. The sterile marginal flowers are up to 4 cm in size and white. 'Mariesii' does not produce many fruits, but those that are formed are red and ripen around August.
Because of its broad and low growth habit, 'Mariesii' is suitable for use in gardens and parks. The shrub grows on any soil, but is less suitable for application on wet soil, heavy clay, very dry soil or very acidic soil.
'Mariesii' was collected in Japan by Charles Maries for Veitch's Nursery between 1877 and 1879. Veitch marketed the cultivar in 1902 and honoured the original finder by naming the plant 'Mariesii'. Hardiness zone 5b.
